Storm Damage Weathering the Storm: Essential Storm Services and Preparedness

Storms are a powerful force of nature, capable of causing significant damage and disruption to our lives. From hurricanes and tornadoes to blizzards and thunderstorms, the impact of severe weather events can be far-reaching. To ensure safety and resilience in the face of these natural disasters, various storm services and preparedness measures play a crucial role in our communities. In this blog post, we'll explore the essential storm services and share tips on how to be better prepared for these unpredictable events.

  1. Weather Forecasting and Alerts

Before any storm hits, the first line of defense is accurate weather forecasting and timely alerts. Meteorologists and weather experts work tirelessly to predict upcoming storms, providing vital information to the public. With the advent of modern technology, we now have access to real-time weather updates and alerts via smartphones and other devices. Stay informed by downloading weather apps or subscribing to local emergency notification systems. Being aware of impending storms allows you to take necessary precautions and make informed decisions.

  1. Emergency Response and First Responders

When a storm strikes, the heroes of the moment are the emergency responders – police, firefighters, and medical personnel. Their dedication and bravery help save lives and property. These professionals work tirelessly to ensure that people are safely evacuated, injured are treated promptly, and fires are extinguished. As residents, it's essential to cooperate with authorities and follow evacuation orders to protect yourself and your community during a storm.

  1. Disaster Relief Organizations

In the aftermath of a storm, disaster relief organizations step in to provide essential services to affected communities. The Red Cross, FEMA, and local NGOs are instrumental in coordinating relief efforts, distributing supplies, and offering shelter to those displaced by storms. Donating to these organizations or volunteering your time can make a significant difference in helping communities recover and rebuild after a storm.

  1. Utilities and Restoration Services

Storms often cause power outages and infrastructure damage. Utility companies, such as electric and water providers, are tasked with restoring services quickly. They work diligently to repair power lines, water mains, and other critical infrastructure to get communities back up and running. Having a backup power source, like a generator, and knowing how to shut off utilities during a storm can help prevent accidents and reduce damage to your property.

  1. Storm Preparedness Tips

While storm services are crucial, personal preparedness is equally important. Here are some tips to help you prepare for storms:

a. Create an Emergency Kit: Assemble a kit with essential supplies, including non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and important documents.

b. Develop an Evacuation Plan: Know your local evacuation routes and have a plan in place for your family and pets. Practice it regularly.

c. Secure Your Home: Reinforce windows, doors, and roofs. Clear your yard of loose objects that could become projectiles during high winds.

d. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of the latest weather updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.

e. Community Involvement: Join community preparedness programs and engage with your neighbors to enhance overall storm readiness.

Conclusion

Storms are an inevitable part of life, and being prepared is the key to mitigating their impact on our homes and communities. While storm services and first responders play a vital role in times of crisis, individual preparedness is equally important. By staying informed, creating an emergency plan, and working together as a community, we can better weather the storms that come our way and emerge stronger on the other side.

When an Emergency Strikes, These Dos and Don'ts May Help!

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

For a stress free claims process, SERVPRO can help manage the insurance paperwork and process. Call for details.

When disaster strikes, it may be hard to think straight. Not knowing who to call, what to do next or where to even go is overwhelming. Below is a list of some dos and don'ts that may be beneficial. If you are able to remember one or two, then that is a step closer in proper action until your SERVPRO of Chelmsford/Westford heroes can arrive.

  • Shut off the source of water if possible, or not conducting electricity. If you are unable to do this, contact the appropriate professional to help.
  • If you are safely able to reach the fuse box, shut off the breakers for the building.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping the area or blotting saturated areas.
  • Move valuables out of the affected area to dry places

Now for the don'ts....

  • If you know electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or equipment has been exposed to water, don't enter the room. These are potential shock hazards that could harm you.
  • Using a vacuum to suck up water also creates a potential shock hazard. Just stay away!
  • To be on the safe side, stay away from any room that has lights affected, or anything electrical. Once water affects it, there is no saying if or when it is going to hurt or kill someone.

While your waiting for help to arrive, the biggest thing to remember is to stay safe. It is the most important factor in any disaster.

June 1st is the start of hurricane season for Massachusetts. Here are some tips to protect yourself from the storm:

1. Have a plan of action in place if a hurricane were to hit. Best place isn’t to be watching the storm but in your basement, bottom floor of a building or below stairs.
2. Stay indoors when storm warnings are in place
3. Check your emergency supplies. Make sure you have a 72 hour kit just in case you are stuck and can’t get out after the storm. First aid, blankets, food, flashlights, water are just a few necessities to have on hand.
4. Make sure your important documents are in a secure location.
5. Figure out an evacuation route.
6. Keep your cell phone charged.
7. Make sure your car has at least a 1/2 tank of gas. Having a gas can is good to have on hand too.

Safety tips for electrical storms

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

30/30 rule

Storm season is coming. here are a few safety precautions to take this summer when being outdoors:

Lightning does not strike in the same place twice.
If you do get stuck in a lightning storm do not take shelter under a tree.
A good place to take shelter would be in your car. A car acts as a Faraday cage. Just make sure to close your windows.
Make sure to unplug your electronics. Or have them plugged into good quality serge protectors.
Other places to seek shelter would be Low ground trenches and ditches or you can find shelter in clumps of bushes or trees of uniform height.
Best bet is to avoid trees, open fields, high ground, and water!
Yes it’s true!! Counting between the lighten and thunder does tell you how far away the storm is!!
Do not talk on a hardwired telephone during a storm. Best bet would be a cell phone or cordless phone.
Odd fact: do not lie or rest on concrete floors or walls.
Stay away from widows and doors.
Avoid plumbing. So no showers or washing hands.
And don’t forget your 4 legged friends. Make sure they are indoors with you and not roaming around or chained to a tree.

Follow these simple steps this summer and you should remain safe from an electrical storm! Happy storm watching!
