When an Emergency Strikes, These Dos and Don'ts May Help!
6/18/2019 (Permalink)
When disaster strikes, it may be hard to think straight. Not knowing who to call, what to do next or where to even go is overwhelming. Below is a list of some dos and don'ts that may be beneficial. If you are able to remember one or two, then that is a step closer in proper action until your SERVPRO of Chelmsford/Westford heroes can arrive.
- Shut off the source of water if possible, or not conducting electricity. If you are unable to do this, contact the appropriate professional to help.
- If you are safely able to reach the fuse box, shut off the breakers for the building.
- Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping the area or blotting saturated areas.
- Move valuables out of the affected area to dry places
Now for the don'ts....
- If you know electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or equipment has been exposed to water, don't enter the room. These are potential shock hazards that could harm you.
- Using a vacuum to suck up water also creates a potential shock hazard. Just stay away!
- To be on the safe side, stay away from any room that has lights affected, or anything electrical. Once water affects it, there is no saying if or when it is going to hurt or kill someone.
While your waiting for help to arrive, the biggest thing to remember is to stay safe. It is the most important factor in any disaster.
