With all the uncertainty in today's world, it is nice to see some local stores getting ready for Halloween. It's brightened our spirits to see costumes on display, candy aisles filled to the brim with Halloween treats and decor. This is also the time of year to remember safety with our kids, families and homes. Plan ahead and think safety first by keeping decorations away from open flames, avoid using candles- glow sticks can always be a great substitue and double check children's costumes for fire/safety features. Follow some of these tips and enjoy the upcoming treats!

• Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns
• When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabrics.

Upon removing the sink we discovered that mold was not only in the sink area but it had spread throughout The whole bathroom.  Unfortunately the bathrooms and to be gutted and fully renovated.  

Some things to think about when it comes to mold:

• Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold can happen when you least expect it. Recently we were called to a job where the homeowners had a sink leak. We were called in to investigate. Upon removing the sink we discovered that mold was not only in the sink area but it had spread throughout The whole bathroom.  Unfortunately the bathrooms and to be gutted and fully renovated.  

Some things to think about when it comes to mold:

“When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

-Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
-Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
-Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants and have the potential to cause other health effects.
-Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
-Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.”

Storm season is coming. here are a few safety precautions to take this summer when being outdoors:

Lightning does not strike in the same place twice.
If you do get stuck in a lightning storm do not take shelter under a tree.
A good place to take shelter would be in your car. A car acts as a Faraday cage. Just make sure to close your windows.
Make sure to unplug your electronics. Or have them plugged into good quality serge protectors.
Other places to seek shelter would be Low ground trenches and ditches or you can find shelter in clumps of bushes or trees of uniform height.
Best bet is to avoid trees, open fields, high ground, and water!
Yes it’s true!! Counting between the lighten and thunder does tell you how far away the storm is!!
Do not talk on a hardwired telephone during a storm. Best bet would be a cell phone or cordless phone.
Odd fact: do not lie or rest on concrete floors or walls.
Stay away from widows and doors.
Avoid plumbing. So no showers or washing hands.
And don’t forget your 4 legged friends. Make sure they are indoors with you and not roaming around or chained to a tree.

Had a fire loss?

This family’s Pepperell garage and apartment suffered from a fire devistaing fore loss. It’s always upsetting when a family experiences a house fire, but SERVPRO of Chelmsford Westford worked hard to recover the structure and contents. In this instance the fire was only in the second floor apartment. Because the garage was build well with fire proofing between the floors, the Pepperell fire department was able to contain the fire to the second floor. The garage below suffered minor damage from water and soot. We are now in the process of cleaning the salvaged contents in the garage, boxing and storing them, so that the remodeling of the second floor can begin. We not only clean but we can also help with restoring your space back to original condition. This was the first year SERVPRO of Chelmsford Westford sponsored the Groton Road Race. This race raises money for our local high school scholarships funds and it races through the beautiful town of Groton. Starting and ending at the local middle school.  

We also created a team of runners who ran the race sporting our very own SERVPRO green shirts. All of our employees came either to run the race or to cheer on the team! Most of the people who ran had never even run a race before! They did awesome! Everyone came in under the 40 minutes mark; ammmazzing!

Spring cleaning time is here! And one thing we forget is the air quality in our homes. Homes may look clean but have you thought about how clean the quality of air is that you are breathing? Here are a few tips on how to get sparky clean air in your homes:

Use steam cleaners: steam cleaners will not only clean but they will also kill mold and mildew.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.  

Smoke and soot facts:

• Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
• Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
• The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Chelmsford/Westford will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

• Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
